Welcome to the Wonderful World of KMU Photography

Alright, I will explain what KMU stands for as this is the most commonly asked question about my business and my logo. Are you ready for it? KMU is me, all me, Kristin Maree Upcroft, yep that is me in the pictures above this sentence. This does cause a bit of confusion as many people still know me by my maiden name of Kristin Byatt, even though I have been married for four years.

Whilst I am busily working on releasing the very first KMU Photography website I started this online diary to share with my fantastic clients and their family and friends Sneak Peeks from their sessions and a little bit about me and my business. Please check back regularly as I will be making some exciting changes in the next couple of weeks. Feel free to click on the ”Contact KMU” button if you would like any further information on the possibility of you seeing your own Sneek Peek here in the not to distant future. Fee free to leave me a comment below each post. I can also be contacted by phone on 0417677101.

Capturing The Moment – Miss Isabel

My husband Aaron thinks I am obsessed with kiddies toes, he often walks past the computer and mutters something like “more toes, are you obsessed with them or something”. I have to confess that yes I do love kiddies toes, but these are an added bonus as I am also obsessed with just watching kiddies entertain themselves and freeze those moments in time. You see Issy was a little over having her photos on her mum and dad’s bed so her mum Ellen gave her some of her bracelets to play with, she perched herself up on the bedside table and had no idea I was even taking these photos.

A KMU Storyboard Sample – Cooper, Emmerson and Campbell

I thought it might be nice to share some samples of my work in between full blog posts. This is a storyboard that I designed for Raquel and Alan, they wanted something to put on a hall table they so they smile as soon as they walk into the house. It made me smile, I hope it does for them too!

Enjoy!

The Wells Family

Several months ago I was asked to take part in a fundraising ladies night for Relay for Life at a local club. Straight away I said I would love to be a part of such a great cause and to have fun and meet people all at the same time. I had a little booth at the event and met some great people on the night and two of the Wells sisters came up and introduced themselves and we had a little chat. I explained to them that if anyone booked their own shoot with me on the night that I would donate a percentage of the fee directly to the Relay for Life event. Not long after that the girls dragged their mum Tracey over and they booked me on the spot.

What can I say about this family? Trevor, Tracey and their three adorable daughters were just the nicest people you could hope to meet. The day of our shoot was one of those dreaded hot, hot days before Christmas but they did not complain once! Well I should clarify that, there was no complaining but I think they though I was a little crazy several times during our time together. Poor Trevor didn’t know how hands on he would be during the shoot. First of all helping ALL four ladies up on the railway pillar on a rickidy baby chair and watching for cars when I had the girls under tunnel near the railway line!

I have also included a copy of the storyboard that I designed for the family based on their favourite images from the shoot. This is a 20×30 inch storyboard and it looks really great if I do say so myself!

Take care, talk soon.

How Do I Choose? When It Is Soo Hard!

I am sure I have shared here before that I am a perfectionist when it comes to my photography, my housework is another story though! I am feeling stressed out and tortured that I do not blog more often as I have so much to share. I thought I might try to illustrate the difficulty that I sometimes have when preparing a blog post, or editing a whole shoot for that matter.

I torment myself when I sit in front of the computer when I have three images, sometimes more like the ones below and for the life of me I can not choose which one to show. Sometimes they are so similar that I can not justify posting both as I try to show a variety of images from a collection. Yet each one is special for its own reason, is it the way she is holding her chubby hands, or the way she is scrunching up her nose when she is laughing. I literally just sit and stare at the screen not being able to bear closing one down. The thought goes through my mind something like this “If they don’t see the other two they won’t know that I only picked this one – but I will know”! The argument goes on in my head for ages and often it all gets too hard and I just get up and do something totally random rather than make a decision.

I would love to know your thoughts on what would make you pick one of the images below over the other. I would love this to be a discussion, feel free to post in the comments and I will get involved too. Maybe some feedback will help me in the future to figure it out and make it a little easier! Would you rather see two images that are “similar” but “different” or would you rather see more variety? Thanks in advance to anyone who decides to join in.

Take care, talk soon.

I always have this dilema and still dont know the answer to the question…..
I like the first one she feel more involved in the moment to me just leaning forward a little more with more hand involvement but they are all good. I like variety too… not much help am I. LOL

  2. Jacqueline Watkins - 22 Jan 2010 at 12:32 pm

I totally get what your saying, and I too go through the same thought process when displaying photos on Facebook! I don’t want to put too many of the same type up, as people may get bored with too many to look at, however can’t decide the best one as they are both just slightly different and can tell a different story! As for these pictures, the first one she looks so cheeky, like she is giggling from deep down in her tummy and really not sure yet, and the other too it’s like she is feeling more comfortable and happy and opening up! I love all three, but the first is my favourite! She is the cutest thing I have seen in a long time. Some of my favourite shots of yours!

  3. Emma - 22 Jan 2010 at 1:06 pm

Okay, the first one is certainly “her”. It reminded me of one of her signature facial expressions!!!

I just love them all, but being her mum, I am thinking out of the three, I would definitely have the first one on top of my list!!!!

  4. Alicia - 22 Jan 2010 at 1:16 pm

Love them all as they tell an almost whole story instead of just providing a glimpse!

  5. Kylie Wiblen - 22 Jan 2010 at 2:11 pm

OMG Kristin!!! You just capture these little kiddies its amazing. I like all three its a story with pictures. Hope my little missy is a good girl for her shoot. Take two and two months on….running everywhere now.

  6. Grandmar - 22 Jan 2010 at 6:00 pm

INDEED HOW DOES ONE CHOOSE> Thay are different, and at first i too chose the first but if it was a child of mine I would like, once her baby look has gone, to have the third image. Framed perhaps with her first childhood drawings of herself, Don’t agonise They will all be loved. as we love you.
    granma.
wellcome back i missed your comments about your joy with all your clints.also all other comment as you win the little ones over as well as the oldies.
Kristin your standard is what gives you theres wonderfull photoes.
    love grand ad Ptattie. h & s f e & e G

  7. Chrystal - 25 Jan 2010 at 10:26 am

of course all 3 are just gorg! BUT if i was to pick it’d be #1. In the first picture you captured “the moment”, the emotion and the glimmer in her eye. the other two are beutiful shots, the 1st one has that extra something special. As with all artists you will painfully go through this every time… but that is what makes you good and gives you the ability to set up these scenes and pick your moments… its the trade off!!! As a client I’d rather see more variety than repetition BUT sometimes I guess that there will be some shoots where it’ll go the other way, as with your photo’s of Millie… the one’s where she is propped up on her hands…couldn’t get enough of it…

Connor, Charlie + Evie – How They Have Grown

“When would be the next best age to get Evie with her brothers when they actually want to have anything to do with her?” was the question Emma asked me when Bubba Evie was two weeks old. Connor was happy to get in some pictures with her as he was a mature 5 years old at the time. Meanwhile, two year old Charlie was a different story, he did not want anything to do with his baby sister, especially not having his photo taken with her. “Take her back to where she came from” his dad Oz told me was what he kept saying to them. To answer Emma’s question I told her between 9 and 11 months and I am so glad she listened to me. Next time Oz might try not to be hungover as I put him to work as my assistant!

One of the biggest changes was now Charlie thought his baby sister Evie was pretty cool and was happy to play with her and therefore be in photos. Even saying excuse me haven’t you taken enough of her now it is MY turn! We had so much fun and had lots of laughs, I hope you can tell from the pictures. Emma has been one of my biggest fans and even gave my number to the dishwasher repair man which is very sweet. I know she has been patiently waiting along time to show off her adorable kids so I thank her for her patience.

Enjoy!

You never quite know what a kiddy is going to do, this is just as we moved the chair and got her to stand against the wall! Future ballet dancer in our midst?

How cool is the interaction in this one. I think this one image sums up Evie’s life with two big brothers!

This one made me giggle, I couldn’t resist showing you. If I could caption this one it would be “does my bum look big in this?”

  1. Emma - 22 Jan 2010 at 9:59 am

hahahaha, does my bum look big in this… CRACK UP!!!! She is such a princess!!

I love all the pics so much!!! I love your little stories at the start too, you remember so much!

  2. Nicole - 22 Jan 2010 at 11:57 am

I love those photos sooo much. I love the white weatherboard house/wall that you’ve taken the pictures against. The kids look gorgeous, and Princess Evie is as cute as ever.. I’m actually considering a trip up your way to have you take my kiddies! Good job, they are all gorgeous.

  3. Kylie - 24 Jan 2010 at 6:49 pm

OMG, fabulous! I would have to be your second biggest fan, I look at your website every week. It’s a shame i don’t have any kidlets (yet) to show off with your amazing work… One day i’ll be knocking on your door though….
